Farmers in California’s Central Valley face some of the most difficult water management challenges in agriculture. High levels of salinity and selenium, combined with clay-heavy soils that trap irrigation water near the surface, can severely impact crop productivity and long-term soil health. To address these issues, Red Rock Ranch owner John Diener developed an innovative solution known as Integrated On-Farm Drainage Management (IFDM).
The IFDM system was designed to help farmers manage excess salts and selenium while improving the productivity and sustainability of agricultural land. At the core of the system is a subsurface drain tile network installed beneath the fields. This drainage system helps remove salt and selenium from the soil and shallow water table by collecting and redirecting excess irrigation water.
Rather than treating this drainage water as waste, the IFDM approach transforms it into a usable resource. The collected water is reused to irrigate specially selected salt-tolerant and selenium-removing crops. These crops can then be harvested and sold, used as on-farm feed or biomass, or processed into other marketable products.
This closed-loop approach creates multiple environmental and economic benefits. By removing harmful salts and selenium from the soil, IFDM helps restore soil productivity and reduces long-term land degradation. Reusing drainage water also improves water efficiency while reducing the need for additional freshwater supplies.
