In 2004, Limoneira partnered with Agromin Corporation to create organic mulch and compost from green waste materials collected in Ventura County. The company now applies this compost across approximately 3,000 acres of lemon and avocado orchards, helping improve both water efficiency and soil quality.

One of the biggest benefits of organic mulch is its ability to reduce water loss through evaporation. By covering the soil surface, mulch helps retain moisture for longer periods, reducing irrigation needs and improving overall water management. Combined with low-flow sprinkler systems, this approach allows orchards to use water more efficiently while supporting healthy crop production.

The compost and mulch also create a healthier environment for beneficial microorganisms that support soil fertility and nutrient cycling. Healthy microbial activity improves soil structure, allowing soils to hold water more effectively and increasing root access to nutrients.

No-till and reduced-disturbance practices further strengthen the system by protecting soil integrity and minimizing erosion. When soil remains undisturbed, organic matter builds naturally over time, improving long-term soil stability and reducing runoff during rain or irrigation events.
